As a parent, watching your child grow and change is precious and lovely. But seeing your child in discomfort is always tricky, that’s why teething can be such a challenging experience for both baby and parents. Whilst each teething experience is different there is no doubt that it can cause your little one some pain or discomfort. Whether you've been through it yourself or just heard the terror of teething from your friends, it’s still best to be prepared. Every child goes through teething and it will soon be your own little cherubs turn.
Whilst there’s no miracle cure to eliminate the pain of these pesky new arrivals, we do have some tried and tested tips to help soothe baby (and you!) during the teething terrors.
Keep it cool
The old age technique for sore gums is to use anything cold. Cold is well known for easing pain, especially during periods of teething. How you go about giving the cold items to your little one is totally up to you. Some of the most effective ways come in the form of simple home-made remedies such as, milk ice cubes, chilled fruit and veg or wet/frozen washcloth. You can try different degrees of coldness to see what works best for your baby.
A b.box Mesh food feeder can come in useful here for the ice cubes and chilled fruit or veg as the mesh bags help keep the soothing items secure and safe even before weaning.
Gets hands on
Perhaps you’re out and about or your ice cubes aren’t freezing quick enough, you actually have 10 tools on your hands than can help soothe your little one. Fingers! Try gently massaging those angry gums with a clean finger, it will relieve some of the pressure and help soothe.
Teething jewellery
We know diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but you might soon have another best friend in the form of teething jewellery. They are great for soothing sore gums, plus they are often stylish enough for no one to realise their purpose! There’s a huge range and lots of variety out there, from necklaces to bracelets, however it is important to choose a brand that is safe. Our teething jewellery are all made from silicone which is BPA, PVC, phthalate, cadmium, lead and heavy metal free - absolutely no nasties to be found!
We love the range from Lara & Ollie, it's a great place to start exploring the world of teething jewellery. Their range is simply stunning!
Choose your weapon
There is a deluge of teething products out there, so we will forgive you for feeling overwhelmed. Most of them have the same premise of providing a child with something to chew on to alleviate the pressure and soothe their gums. It really is up to your personal choice and preference what you pick!
A popular choice and one we highly recommend is Sophie la Giraffe – Teething ring. It is made from 100% natural rubber and the addition of the rings make it great for little hands to grab hold of and to sooth their painful gums.
Bib it!
With the copious amount of drool your little one is drowning you and your house in, you can’t ever have enough bibs to hand to mop up the mess. Again, the choice is really yours, the options are endless!
We recommend the Close Bib Stage 2. The print side repels stains and is wipe-able whilst the soft fleecy side will soak up all those dribbles – every parents dream!
Stay calm
Whilst teething can be tricky for your baby, it’s tiring for the parents as well. Feeling hopelessly helpless whilst they are in pain can sometimes feel very frustrating. Stay calm and positive for your little one, it really won’t last forever! Perseverance and patience are key, teething can sometimes be a case of trial and error to find a solution that works for your child. Keep going! Remember, it’s only a phase.
